Marrakech to M’Hamid — Crossing into the South
The road climbs through the High Atlas before continuing past Ouarzazate towards Agdz and the Drâa Valley. Mountain slopes give way to palm groves and earth-built settlements. Breaks divide the long journey without filling it with hurried sightseeing stops.
From the vehicle, the mountains are experienced as a sequence of bends, slopes and changing views rather than a single pass photograph. Look for the relationship between the road, small settlements and cultivated land. The descent towards the south gradually opens up the horizon, giving the first sense of the scale of the journey ahead.
Further along the Drâa corridor, the concentration of palms and buildings offers a useful contrast with the open ground beyond the valley. These are places where people live and work, not simply scenery on the way to camp. Arriving in M’Hamid gives the desert journey a human starting point before the caravan leaves the road behind.
At the M’Hamid camp, meet the team and separate your walking essentials from the luggage for the caravan. Spend the first night at camp before the six walking stages begin.
