Aït Ben HaddouMorocco tours from Marrakech, designed around your time
Travel privately to Erg Chigaga or Merzouga with realistic road days, carefully selected camps and local support from arrival to departure.
Where the road from Marrakech can take you
From the High Atlas to Atlantic light and the deep Sahara, Marrakech connects Morocco’s strongest journeys.
Leaving Marrakech is a gradual change of worlds. The city’s palms and ochre walls fall behind as the road climbs into the High Atlas, bending toward the Tizi n’Tichka. Villages cling to mountain slopes, weather shifts quickly, and the first kasbahs announce the drier country beyond the pass.
Aït Ben Haddou and Ouarzazate are not boxes to tick on the way south. They mark the transition into Morocco’s great earthen valleys. From here, one road follows Dades and Todra toward Merzouga; another enters the Drâa Valley, passing palms, ksour and old caravan settlements toward Zagora and M’Hamid.
Beyond M’Hamid, the tarmac ends. The final approach to Erg Chigaga crosses open hammada, dry lake country and shifting sand by 4×4. Merzouga is different: farther east, more developed and framed by the tall dunes of Erg Chebbi. Choosing between them changes the rhythm, distance and feeling of the entire journey.

Ouarzazate — Taourirt Kasbah
Zagora & Drâa Valley
Merzouga — Erg ChebbiErg Chigaga vs Merzouga vs Zagora
These names are often sold as interchangeable. They are not. Distance, dune scale, access and atmosphere are different, and the right choice depends on your available nights.
Erg Chigaga
Best with four or five days. Reach M’Hamid through the Drâa Valley, then continue off-road into a quieter and more remote dune field.
Merzouga — Erg Chebbi
Best for routes continuing to Fes. Erg Chebbi offers the highest dunes, many camp choices and a long but rewarding eastern circuit.
Zagora & Drâa Valley
Useful when time is limited, but it is a southern desert gateway rather than the large dune experience shown in many Sahara photographs.

Morocco desert tour questions
Erg Chigaga or Merzouga: which is better?
Choose Chigaga for remoteness and off-road travel; Merzouga for easier logistics and more camp choice.

Three days is possible but rushed. Four or five days gives a better pace.
Are desert camp tents private?
Yes. Bathrooms, heating and camp size vary, so we confirm the exact category.
Is the camel ride compulsory?
No. You can reach camp by 4×4 or combine both options.
When is the best season?
October to April is most comfortable. Summer needs heat-aware planning.
Can the tour finish in Fes?
