3-Day Marrakech to Merzouga Desert Tour: Atlas, Dadès & Erg Chebbi

We leave Marrakech early enough to give the High Atlas room to matter. The road climbs through mountain villages and bends toward Tizi n’Tichka, where we stop for views and comfort when they improve the day. We avoid turning the pass into a chain of souvenir stops; the point is to watch the landscape change from the Marrakech plain into southern Morocco.

Aït Ben Haddou is the main cultural stop. We walk into the earthen ksar and explain why this settlement mattered on old caravan routes between the Sahara and Marrakech. A private local guide can be added if you want deeper architectural and historical context; otherwise the visit remains at your own pace.

After Ouarzazate the route continues through palm and kasbah country toward the Valley of Roses and Dadès. We finish the day in the Dadès region with dinner and a private room, rather than pushing several more hours toward Merzouga.

The morning begins among the rock formations and cultivated strips of the Dadès. We continue toward Tinghir and stop at Todra Gorge, where getting out of the vehicle matters more than another viewpoint. A short walk between the limestone walls gives the day a natural break before the long open landscapes toward the Sahara.

East of Todra, villages, palm groves and dry plateaus lead through the Tafilalt region. We keep lunch and comfort stops practical so that Merzouga is not reached after the best light has disappeared. When Erg Chebbi rises from the flat desert plain, the change is immediate.

At the dune edge you choose the confirmed camp access: camel ride or 4x4 transfer. We aim for the late light, then settle into the camp for dinner and the desert night. The exact tent category and private-bathroom setup are confirmed before booking.

Sunrise is optional, not an obligation. After breakfast we leave Erg Chebbi and turn west by the southern road rather than simply repeating Day 2. The route crosses the stony country around Alnif and Jbel Saghro toward N’Kob, where kasbah architecture and small oases replace the high dunes.

From N’Kob we reconnect with the Draa Valley around Agdz. Palm groves, earthen villages and river agriculture make this return feel different from the outbound route. We continue through Ouarzazate and then cross the High Atlas once more toward Marrakech.

This is the demanding day of the tour: in normal conditions expect roughly nine to ten hours of driving plus meal and comfort stops. We therefore do not recommend booking an evening flight or a time-sensitive activity in Marrakech. Drop-off is at your confirmed accessible hotel, riad meeting point or other Marrakech location.
