3-Day Marrakech to Fes Desert Tour via Merzouga & Erg Chebbi

We leave Marrakech with enough time to let the High Atlas become part of the journey rather than an obstacle between two hotels. The road climbs through mountain villages and dry valleys toward Tizi n’Tichka. We stop where a viewpoint or comfort break genuinely improves the day, not because a shop expects a bus.

On the southern side of the mountains, Aït Ben Haddou gives the first real change in architecture. We walk into the earthen ksar and explain how settlements like this were linked to caravan movement between the Sahara and Marrakech. Beyond Ouarzazate, the road follows oasis fields, kasbahs and the Valley of Roses toward Dadès. The first night is here because it makes the three-day crossing work: you reach the south without exhausting the day, eat dinner at the accommodation and keep the Sahara for tomorrow.

Leaving Dadès, cultivated strips and rock formations gradually give way to the Tinghir oasis. At Todra Gorge we get out and walk between the high limestone walls. On a short desert itinerary, this matters: the body gets a break from the vehicle and the landscape is experienced at human speed.

From Todra we continue east through palm country and dry plateaus toward the Tafilalt. We manage lunch and practical stops so that Merzouga is reached before the best light disappears. The first sight of Erg Chebbi rising from the flat plain is one of the strongest transitions on this route.

At the dune edge, camp access follows the option confirmed before departure: camel ride or 4x4 transfer. We leave room for sunset rather than arriving after dark, then settle into the private tent for dinner and the desert night.

After breakfast we leave the dunes behind and head north. Around Errachidia, the Ziz Valley cuts a long green ribbon through a dry landscape; we use the best practical viewpoint rather than multiplying short roadside stops.

The road climbs toward Midelt and then into the Middle Atlas. Forests, cooler air and upland towns replace the desert plateau. Depending on daylight, traffic and the pace of the group, we may pause in cedar country or near Ifrane, but we do not promise a wildlife stop or force a detour simply to fill the itinerary.

Fes is the end of this tour, not a rushed sightseeing stop. We take you to the confirmed accessible hotel, riad meeting point, station or agreed address.
