Arrive in Fes and Explore the Medieval Medina
Welcome to Fes, Morocco’s spiritual and cultural capital, and one of the most atmospheric starting points for a journey across the country. After arrival, meet your driver or local representative and transfer to your riad or hotel. Depending on your arrival time, begin exploring Fes with a private orientation or guided medina visit designed to introduce the city’s layered history, craftsmanship, and rhythm.
Fes is a city that rewards slow discovery. Its old medina, Fes el-Bali, is a living maze of narrow alleys, covered markets, artisan workshops, fountains, mosques, madrasas, and family homes hidden behind carved wooden doors. Start near Bab Boujloud, the famous blue gate, before entering the pedestrian streets where donkeys still carry goods and traditional crafts are practiced in small workshops.
A highlight of the visit is the Chouara Tannery viewpoint, where leather is dyed in stone vats using techniques passed down over centuries. From the terrace above, the view is one of the most iconic in Morocco: circular dye pits, colorful hides, workers moving carefully between vats, and the dense medina stretching around them. Continue toward Al Attarine Madrasa, known for its zellij tilework, carved plaster, and cedarwood detail. The area around Al-Qarawiyyin reflects Fes’s long role as a center of learning, faith, and scholarship.
If time allows, visit Fes el-Jdid and the mellah, the historic Jewish quarter, before ending the day with panoramic views from the Merenid Tombs. From above, the medina appears as a sea of rooftops, minarets, and narrow lanes, especially beautiful in late afternoon light.
Dinner can be enjoyed in your riad or a carefully selected local restaurant. This first day sets the tone for the journey: intimate, cultural, historic, and deeply Moroccan before the road turns south toward the mountains and Sahara.
